Before I begin blogging about my journey through ju-jitsu, let me tell you why I felth necessary to create this blog.
I started training ju-jitsu some months back and I am still a white belt. The journey has been very interesting so far and I have to say, I am enjoying myself throughly. I did train jujitsu for about six months before I began this new committment but I quit the first time around. My reasons for quitting were many which included
1) Getting tapped out constatnly resulting in low self esteem
2) Giving a 110% in every training session resulting in exhaustion and injuries
3) Expecting too much of myself and not giving myself room to grow
4) etc etc
I am sure most people reading this post who started jujitsu but quit for one of these reasons or other reasons. Well let me tell you now that I have found the remedy for all these ailments and I plan on never quitting my jujitsu training.
First, I pledge to never be ashmed in tapping out (even to someone who just started training). It is simply not possible to grow and achieve betterment in jujitsu without getting handled first. Every tap will simply be an opportunity to learn and I will not quit learning.
Second I pledge to never expect more than what is expected of a reasonable human being in a limited time. I have a job, a family and other interests besides jujitsu that I would like to pursue. If it takes a long time to see improvements in my technique, so be it but I will never quit.
Thrid I pledge to always have fun and never brun myself out. If it turns out that training too hard is having an effect on my psychological well being and/or my physical well being, I will tone down my intensity untill I start having fun again. I will keep having fun and I will never quit.
I recently learned the reason the reason that one of my favorite jujitsu fighters, Royce Gracie, wears a blue belt during his seminars. The reasosning I was told by one of my firends is that too many schools are giving out belts to people who do not deserve it and the way it was in Royce's fathers time was that the instructores wore blue while the student wore white. Therefore, I pledge to always wear my white belt even after I have been promoted and I will always remain a student of jiujitsu.
So remember, have fun, take it easy, don't quit and keep learning.
